Lapeer County Habitat for Humanity Needs You!

“I want to help with Habitat. What can I do?” It takes many volunteers with a variety of gifts to make a Habitat home. Not everyone has the talent to pick up a hammer and build, but everyone has a talent to contribute. Some prepare food, some raise money, some serve on committees, some design newsletters, and some take photos. As Paul points out in chapter 12 of 1 Corinthians, every gift from God and every gift is good. Where can your gifts fit into Habitat's needs? Whatever your talent, personality, or schedule, Habitat has a volunteer opportunity for you! Consider calling 810-664-7111. or print out a volunteer application and mail it to us.

Organization is my middle name!

Like to organize, file, copy, or sort? If you can give approximately 2-3 hours per week to help with office needs, that would be grateful. Habitat will provide training as needed. Computer skills are helpful but not necessary.

Committee, anyone?

Habitat is run by a Board of Directors and is further comprised of several committees. Looking over this list of committees, where does your interest take you?

My interest is in working with people.

Habitat’s mission is not only to build homes in partnership with those in need but, just as important, to affect a positive change in the lives of our partner families. Are you a successful homeowner and enjoy sharing knowledge with others? Perhaps volunteering to do a presentation to our homeowners would be of interest to you. For those handy around the house, how about teaching some repair basics in a class on “Home Maintenance 101” Do you have legal expertise? Our first-time homeowners could use help on preparing a will. Do you enjoy working one-on-one with families? Volunteering to act as an advocate, a friend, to a partner family can be a rewarding experience. As one advocate recently said, “I've connected with them. It's more than just building houses. We know each other. It's a bonding thing.”

I’m definitely not a people person!

Habitat exists in Lapeer County because of our volunteers, many of whom work behind the scene. For example, when Habitat was first established here, volunteers scattered little house-shaped fund-raising boxes throughout the business community. Perhaps you saw one of these and dropped your change into the box. Now is the time to bring back this successful fundraiser. Give our office a call so we can fill you in on the details of this “behind-the-scenes” fundraiser.

I’m an “idea” person. Can you use my help?

You bet we can! We need creative thinkers to help coordinate Habitat’s needs with people talent and enthusiasm. For example, the Lakeville High School Students designed wood donation boxes for us as part of our fundraising efforts. Do you have marketing skills? Public relations Committee needs you to help promote our mission, our fundraising promotions coming up and other Habitat activities.

I love to get down and dirty on a job site.

Lapeer County Habitat abides by the HFH International guidelines that require house construction to be done using volunteer labor. We are constantly updating our database of volunteers who wish to give of their time pouring cement, framing a house, mudding, or painting interior or exterior walls.

Yikes! My plate is too full at the moment.

We hear you loud and clear, and we understand how life tugs us in many directions. If giving of your time is not an option now, you can help spread the good word about Habitat by passing on this email. You can remember Habitat and its work in your prayers. You can make a financial contribution that will help pay for materials for our next home.
